Whatever Happened To? #7: Die Screaming, Susan George

I typically like a good B movie, especially a good campy one from the sixties or seventies. There's something about watching a trashy cult movie late at night that's just flat out enjoyable. I'm not too discerning when I put in the DVD for one of these cult classics. I don't expect much - just deliver the cheese and sleaze and Gilligan is happy.

Gilligan wasn't happy with Die Screaming, Marianne (1971). Not happy at all.

I fought off the urge to fast forward through most of the movie, but in the end my will power was simply too weak. I'll spare you the details and suffice it to say that it should have been rated G and could have passed for a lousy TV movie. Here was my absolute favorite part of the film.... if I hadn't been nearly comatose, I would have clapped.

But what lured me to the film in the first place was the actress Susan George. As a self declared retrophile, I am ashamed to admit that I was unfamiliar with her. Yet, her pop credentials are legendary.

She was the girlfriend of Jack Jones - the guy that sings The Love Boat theme! Of course, Jones is an accomplished vocalist with a number of great hits (including "Strangers in the Night" BEFORE Frank did it). Plus, the dude was just plain suave. I just did a post on TV theme songs, and I'm in the mood to hear one sung by the best...

Susan was also romantically involved with both Prince Charles and Andy Gibb! This definitely gives her some retrospace street cred.

Currently, she raises Arabian horses on her own farm and has taken up equestrian photography. Go here and see a fine example of her work... I was actually pretty impressed. She's also marketing equine therapeutic treatments (i.e. horse vitamins).

So, will I let the awful Die Screaming, Marianne stop me from exploring Susan George's films any further? Hell, no. Next stop - the Dino DeLaurentis film, Mandingo - a movie that's been called "the nasty illegitimate cousin to Gone with the Wind." Susan George was apparently never one to shy away from the seedy or controversial.... and I look forward to seeing what's in store.

And no, that's not Clarke Gable and Vivien Leigh. That's Susan George and Perry King, the guy from Riptide. Victor Fleming had to have rolled over in his grave at this one... actually, I think Fleming rose from his grave and ate Dino DeLaurentis.
