I just read over at
Jimmi's blog that
Shelly Winters has passed on.
For people in my age group (and you know who you are), Shelly was an omnipresent figure: the big, ballsy, brassy broad always appearing on talk shows in the 70's, or playing crazy dames in made for TV movies (god but she freaked me out in that tele-flick,
The Devil's Daughter as the evil Lillith Malone!), and of course many of us have a soft spot for her due to her performance as Belle Rosen in The Posiden Adventure (in which she uttered the classic line, "In the water, I'm a very skinny lady!").
In the 80's and 90's Shelly played Nana Mary, the tough talking grandmother, on Roseanne.
But take a look at her early stuff and you will find a sultry, sexy woman who really could act. She could do plain-jane (
A Place in the Sun) or a sultry Saloon keeper (
Frenchie) or even a major Bitch of a Mother! (
A Patch of Blue).
Shelly Winters was 85 when she died.
