1960s - #4: The Town Hall in New York City was built by The League for Political Education, whose fight for passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution led them to commission the building of a meeting space where “people of every rank and station” could be educated on the important issues of the day. Town Hall was designed by to reflect the democratic principles of the League. Thus, box seats were not included while every effort was made to ensure that no seat had an obstructed view. This design principle gave birth to Town Hall's long-standing mantra: "Not a bad seat in the house." Located on 43rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, the 1500 seat Town Hall not only became a meeting place, but also one of the city’s premiere concert venues. For example, on April 12, 1963, 52 years ago today, Town Hall hosted a 21 year old Bob Dylan as he played his first major US concert. The 600 people in the audience was the largest crowd Dylan had played for at that point in his career. This soundboard recording captures every moment of that historic performance. As you listen, you’ll clearly hear a few moments of nervousness from Dylan. But you’ll also hear the sound that would soon revolutionize a generation, music with a message, fighting for civil rights while opposing war, sung in a less than perfect voice yet with crystal clear intent. Download this one to hear Dylan on the cusp of becoming the musical leader of a new generation.
