The 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 S' Drift Mode Will Get You Sideways In No Time

While detailing some of the functions of the new A45 S 4Matic+, which we won’t be getting in the States, Mercedes-AMG put the spotlight on the playful Drift Mode.

The system, which is standard in the S model and optional in the base grade, as part of the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, makes powersliding available to the masses – or so to speak. It makes use of a unique 4Matic all-wheel drive system with a special Torque Control rear axle diff with two electronically controlled multi-disc clutches and some clever electronic tuning to get the hot hatch go sideways.

Here’s how you put it in Drift Mode

To engage the Drift Mode, you’ll have to start the engine and put the transmission in manual. Then, you’ll need to select the Sport+ driving mode and turn off the ESP. A sub-menu will appear in the digital instrument cluster, telling drivers to confirm the activation by pulling on the right paddle shifter, and only then you’ll be able make the car gracefully slide on tarmac (or other surfaces if you can stomach it).

Mercedes-AMG demonstrated the technology on video, which you can find below along with a second clip, shot in Spain, at the media launch of the A45 S, which shows how quick the mega hatch is in the real world.

The test took place with an extra person and luggage in the car, and the target was the manufacturer claimed 3.9 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) of the A45 S. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, with twin-scroll turbocharging, produces a massive 421 PS (415 hp / 310 kW), at 6,750 rpm, and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque between 5,000 and 5,250 rpm.

The non-S variant is one-tenth of a second slower and gets a slightly de-tuned version of the same unit, which develops only 387 PS (382 hp / 285 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. Both are fitted with a standard, 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system, with AMG Torque Control.
